The Austria native probably would be playing for the Austrian team at the World Championships if he wasn’t starting a Grand Rapids Griffins playoff series tonight. They play the Milwaukee Admirals tonight in Milwaukee. Undoubtedly, Kasper is proud of his country’s today for pulling off one of the most remarkable days in World Championship history.
Trailing 6-1 to Canada going into the third period, Austria scored at 3:14, 4:08, 10:41 and 15:56 to pull within one goal. Then, with their goalie pulled, they scored again at 19:11 to tie the game 6-6.
There was no storybook ending. Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares scored 15 seconds into overtime to give Canada a 7-6 win. But it was still a monumental performance by Austria.
The Austrians had no business being competitive against Canada. And the comeback was one for the ages. According to the IIHF story, Canada had given up five goals in a period four times in 94 years at the World Championships.
Before Austria netted five on Tuesday, it had not occurred in 43 years.
